TATTOO AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS
Guidelines for Caring for Your New Tattoo
- Maintain Cleanliness: Always wash your hands thoroughly before touching your tattoo.
- Removal of Bandage: Within 1-2 hours of getting your tattoo, carefully remove the bandage. Avoid re-bandaging as your tattoo needs air to facilitate healing.
- Washing Routine: Wash your tattoo with an antibacterial liquid soap using only your hands. Avoid using washcloths or anything abrasive.
- Drying Technique: Gently pat your tattoo dry with a paper towel. Avoid rubbing or using rough fabrics.
- Application of Lotion/Ointment: During the initial 3-4 days, apply a small amount of unscented lotion or tattoo ointment to your tattoo using clean hands. Ensure the ointment is absorbed properly, and pat off any excess with a clean paper towel. Avoid using Vaseline, petroleum, Neosporin, or Bag Balm.
- Protective Measures: On the first night, you may wrap your tattoo in saran wrap to prevent it from sticking to your bedding. Avoid using cloth bandages or pads as they may adhere to your tattoo. Wear soft, clean clothing over your tattoo for the first 2 weeks, avoiding abrasive materials. For foot tattoos, go barefoot whenever possible, or wrap your tattoo in saran wrap before wearing clean cotton socks and shoes.
- Peeling Phase: After 3-4 days, your tattoo will begin to peel, which is a normal part of the healing process. Refrain from picking at the skin and switch to using a mild, unscented lotion without dyes or perfumes.
- Avoidance of Irritants: Do not pick, scratch, or irritate your tattoo. Avoid soaking your tattoo for 2 weeks, and refrain from swimming or using hot tubs during this time. Protect your tattoo from direct sun exposure for at least 3 weeks, and thereafter, apply sunscreen when exposed to sunlight. Avoid wearing abrasive materials, jewelry, or shoes that rub against your tattoo. Ensure anyone touching your tattoo washes their hands first, and be cautious with gym equipment by washing it thoroughly before use.
Additional Tips:
- Ice your tattoo to reduce swelling.
- Elevate your tattooed area to minimize swelling.
- Keep showers short.
